Using a Smartphone App to Aid in Mobility Following Total Knee Arthroplasty

This clinical trial aims to decrease the costliness of traditional home care after a total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The researchers use the program from a new smartphone app as a less costly alternative to TKA. The study was developed in response to the state of Louisiana overusing skilled home health care from nurses and  physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, medical social services, or home health aide services. Hopefully, the smartphone app can decrease the cost of aftercare from an average of $3,709 per patient.


Study Information

This study will place patients in one of two groups at random: a control group and an interventional group. The control group will be those who receive traditional home health care after total knee arthroplasty. The intervention group will receive the smartphone app to use after total knee arthroplasty instead of traditional home health care.


Inclusion Criteria

  • All sexes, ages 45 to 64 years old
  • Have received a unilateral TKA
  • Those discharged directly home from the hospital after surgery


Exclusion Criteria

  • Patients who choose to not use the app within 24 hours after being discharged from the hospital
  • Those who don’t use the app over any 24-hour period during the study
  • Readmittance to the hospital during home recovery
