The Carilion Clinic is hosting a clinical trial that measures how pre-surgery exercise, known as Prehabilitation, may improve recovery in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) patients after surgery. Improvements are measured using the 6-minute walk (6MW) test. Additionally, Change of Manual muscle tests (hip flexion, extension, abduction; knee flexion, extension and ankle dorsiflexion) over time using the MicroFET2 and Change of Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) over time using a questionnaire are measured.
This study will place patients in one of two groups at random: an experimental arm group with an intervention and a control arm group. Prehabilitation exercise will serve as the intervention for the experimental arm group. Patients in this group will participate in a prehabilitation exercise program three times a week for eight weeks. Usual standard of care will be used in the control arm group. This includes written home exercise program for strength and flexibility provided during a total joint education pre-surgery class.
- All sexes, ages 50 to 85 years old
- Those waiting on primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty for knee osteoarthritis
- agree to participate in study and complete a guided exercise program three times per week for eight weeks
- Currently use tobacco
- Body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 kg/m2
- Pain in the contralateral limb of 5/10 or more while climbing stairs
- Those who had knee or hip replacement surgery in the last year
- Any medical conditions that prevent regular exercise
- Any disease that affects functional performance such as Stroke or Parkinson’s disease
