Improving Rehabilitation Outcomes After Total Hip Arthroplasty

The VA Office of Research and Development and the University of Colorado, Denver are hosting a clinical trial compares the effectiveness of physical therapy after a total hip arthroplasty. The study is being performed in response to an estimate that total hip arthroplasties are expected to double over the next twenty years and a decrease in physical activities and life quality from standard physical therapy. Two physical therapy programs will be monitored: a standard of care physical therapy and a physical therapy program targeting core and hip muscle strength and function. 


Study Information

This is an interventional study with an experimental arm with an intervention of functional strength integration and a control group arm of usual care. The outcomes will be measured using tests, surveys, indexes, and scales including:

  • 6 minute walk test 
  • 4 meter walk test
  • 30 second sit-to-stand test
  • Functional Gait Assessment
  • Isometric strength
  • Modified Trendelenburg test
  • Peak internal hip abduction moment
  • ActiGraph
  • Veterans RAND 12-item health survey
  • Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index
  • Patient Activation Measure (PAM)
  • Motivation scale
  • Falls, injury, pain


Inclusion Criteria

  • BMI less than or equal to 40
  • Receiving unilateral primary total hip arthroplasty for osteoarthritis


Exclusion Criteria

  • Severe contralateral leg OA (greater than or equal to a 5/10 pain level while climbing stairs)
  • Unstable orthopaedic conditions
  • Neurological or pulmonary problems that severely limit function
  • Uncontrolled hypertension or diabetes
  • Use of illegal substances
